According to the IRS, identity thieves have gained access to the IRS website and accessed tax return and personal information for more than 100,000 taxpayers. The perpetrators used a security flaw in the “Get Transcript” system, which included knowing some personal information about the taxpayer, like Social Security number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address. The on-line “Get Transcript” feature is currently unavailable. The “Get Transcripts by Mail” is still available.
The IRS added it is notifying taxpayers whose information was accessed through the breach.
